The free agent market in summer 2026 is stacked with talent. Several world-class players are out of contract, and clubs are lining up to sign them without paying a transfer fee. Here are the best free agents available.

The top free agents

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool, 33): Salah's contract saga has been the story of the season. Liverpool offered him an extension, but the two sides couldn't agree on wages. At 33, Salah is still one of the best wingers in the world — 14 Premier League goals this season. Saudi Pro League clubs are offering massive wages, but Salah reportedly wants to stay in Europe. PSG, Barcelona, and Inter Milan are all interested.

Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich, 25): Davies is the best left-back in the world, and he's available for free. Real Madrid have been in talks for over a year, and they're the overwhelming favorites. Davies would replace Mendy and give Madrid a dynamic attacking option on the left side. This is potentially the best free transfer since Lewandowski moved to Barcelona.

Jonathan David (Lille, 26): David has scored 20+ goals in each of his last 4 seasons at Lille. He's a clinical finisher who can play as a lone striker or in a pair. Arsenal, Tottenham, and AC Milan are all interested. At 26, he's in his prime, and whoever signs him is getting a bargain.

Thomas Partey (Arsenal, 32): Partey has been injury-prone at Arsenal, but when fit, he's one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League. He's likely to leave on a free, and clubs in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Serie A are interested.

Leroy Sane (Bayern Munich, 30): Sane's time at Bayern has been inconsistent, but his talent is undeniable. His pace, his dribbling, and his left foot make him a dangerous winger. He could be a great signing for a club that can manage his fitness and motivation.

How free transfers work

When a player's contract expires, they can sign with any club without a transfer fee. However, the player typically receives a large signing bonus (often equivalent to what the transfer fee would have been) and higher wages. So while the buying club saves on the transfer fee, the overall cost can still be significant.

Players can sign pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs from January 1 of their final contract year. This means many free agent deals are agreed months before the player actually becomes available. Davies to Real Madrid, for example, was reportedly agreed in principle back in January.

The best free transfers in history

The greatest free transfer ever is probably Robert Lewandowski from Dortmund to Bayern Munich in 2014. He went on to score over 300 goals for Bayern. Andrea Pirlo to Juventus (2011) is another classic — AC Milan let him go for free, and he became the best midfielder in Serie A for the next 4 years.

More recently, Lionel Messi's move to PSG (2021) and then Inter Miami (2023) were both free transfers. The free agent market has become increasingly important as clubs look for ways to acquire talent without paying inflated transfer fees.
