Bernardo Silva's Barcelona Dream Isn't Worth the Hassle for City

By Jake Morrison · March 19, 2026

Another Summer, Another Bernardo Saga

Here we go again, eh? Summer transfer window, and it's like clockwork: Bernardo Silva, Barcelona, Champions League dreams. It's the annual pantomime. We saw it last year, too, remember? All the whispers, the "sources close to the player," and then nothing really happened. Silva stayed put, signed a new deal through 2026, and went on to help City lift their fourth straight Premier League title, contributing six goals and nine assists in 35 league appearances.

But the rumour mill, bless its heart, never stops churning. This time, the talk is that he really wants to go to Barca. Look, I get it. Barcelona is a pull for a lot of players. The history, the city, the whole vibe. Thing is, they're still in a bit of a financial mess, aren't they? They're reportedly looking for creative ways to structure a deal, maybe an initial loan with an obligation to buy next summer. City aren't going to be thrilled about that, especially for a player they value north of £50 million.

Does City Even Need Him Anymore?

Now, this might be a hot take, but hear me out: would City even miss Bernardo that much if he left? Yeah, he's brilliant. Unquestionably one of the best technical players in the squad, a true Guardiola favourite. He's made 355 appearances for the club since arriving in 2017, scoring 66 goals. He's won everything there is to win. But the team keeps evolving. Phil Foden has absolutely exploded, winning the Premier League Player of the Season award with 19 goals and 8 assists. Kevin De Bruyne is still pulling strings, and Oscar Bobb is waiting in the wings, looking more confident with every minute he gets.

And let's be real, City isn't a selling club that needs the money. They're not desperate to offload a key player, especially not on terms that don't suit them. If Barca can't cough up the cash, then why should City budge? Silva is 29, still in his prime, and a massive part of the squad's depth and tactical flexibility. Losing him would hurt, sure, but it wouldn't be the end of the world for a team stacked with talent like City's.

Here's the thing: chasing a player who clearly wants to be elsewhere can sometimes be more trouble than it's worth. If Bernardo's heart is set on Barcelona, maybe it's time to cut ties, get a decent fee, and let him go. But only if the price is right. Anything less than £50m is a joke for a player of his quality and importance, especially for a club that just won the league. Barcelona need to pay up or move on.

My bold prediction: Bernardo Silva stays at Manchester City this summer. Barcelona can't meet the asking price, and he'll knuckle down for another season, reminding everyone why he's so highly rated.
